They leased a dairy farm close to NZ’s capital city of Wellington, which had a small egg production facility attached. This unit sparked our passion for all things 'chicken'! During our time in the Wellington region, they grew their family to include two sons Harry and Paul, plus sister Janie. In 1967, the Bennik family relocated to the Horowhenua region to pursue poultry as the family’s core business and Bennik Poultry Farm Ltd was formed. In 1970, Nick Bennik the last of our four children was born. Harry and Wilhelmina were some of the first commercial scale egg producers in NZ to adopt the new “caged” egg production systems of the era.
The second generation of Benniks - moving to free range and barn laid egg production
In the mid 1980s, the reins of Bennik's poultry farm passed to Harry and Paul and the second generation of Bennik poultry farming well and truly began. In the early 90s, both Janie and Nick established larger scale barn and free range production sites. With the families passion to innovate and lead the industry, 1993 saw the family's decision to move away from “caged” egg production systems to solely barn and free range methods.
The Bennik family were the first commercial scale farmers to do so on a voluntary basis and their involvement with the SPCA blue tick scheme commenced circa 1995 and continues today.

Fast forward to 2020, the Bennik family decides to merge all their farming interests and NZ Egg Group is formed.
